Online crime shows gender bias

Most men believe that they know more about online security than women, but both sexes are equally vulnerable to malware and other threats.

A poll by security strategist AVG of 1,400 UK adults found that men are likely to be more confident about their levels of online protection, and only four per cent are unaware of what protection they have.

Spammers favour NatWest

NatWest has topped the list of most popular company names used by fraudsters when targeting the personal finance industry.

ClearMyMail said that every one of its customers was sent an average of 18 fake NatWest phishing emails, 12 Citibank emails, five HSBC emails, three Abbey emails and two Lloyds TSB emails during December.

Security concerns affect IE7 update

Security concerns have prompted Microsoft to issue an advisory on how to avoid auto updating to IE7 with the next Windows Server Update, due Feb. 12.

Companies wishing to remain with IE6 have been offered guidelines explaining how to prevent the automated update taking effect.

Hackers target large resellers

Larger online resellers are more likely to come under deliver highly sophisticated attacks from hackers, according to the fourth annual UK Online Fraud Report from CyberSource.

The research found that 42 per cent of large online merchants had been aware of fraudsters targeting specific products that could be easily sold.

US to issue wireless passports

US citizens who travel frequently to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean could soon be equipped with electronic passports. Naturally, flying is off the menu - the cards can be read wirelessly from a distance of 20ft and are available only for land and sea travel.

The cards will cost $45, or $97 with close-range RFID reading only.
